ABSTRACT
This study examined the knowledge, perception and attitude of secondary school students toward hepatitis using Ikeja, Lagos State as a case study. The study was specifically carried out to determine the knowledge of hepatitis infection among secondary school students in Lagos State, determine the perception of hepatitis infection among secondary school students in Lagos State, explore the attitude and practices of secondary school students towards hepatitis infection, identify factors that can be adopted to improve the knowledge and perception of secondary school students on hepatitis. The study employed the survey descriptive research design. A total of 200 responses were validated from the survey whose respondents were SS1 to SS3 students from four (4) selected secondary schools in Ikeja, Lagos State. From the responses obtained and analysed, the findings revealed that most of the students had a good attitude towards hepatitis Virus infection. They indicated that healthy people need vaccination against hepatitis, and thought that people of their own age need vaccination. Students were also willing to be tested for hepatitis Virus infection. Despite the good attitude of the students towards hepatitis infection, only few of them had ever been vaccinated against the disease, which was disappointingly low. The main reasons stated for the non-patronize of hepatitis vaccination was that students believe they are not at risk for getting hepatitis Virus, hepatitis vaccine cost too much, and they do not believe in the hepatitis vaccine. The study therefore recommended that there is the need to increase the knowledge about the seriousness of hepatitis and raise the proportion of students getting vaccinated. Also, since health care workers have influence on people’s decision making of getting hepatitis vaccination, it is important that they reach out to secondary schools to educated students about the disease, ways of transmission and risk with the disease.
